Top 25 tracks 2011

Kim Jong-Il and Skrillex

Merry Christmas to all three of you who are interested in this list.  Nothing from big names like Modeselektor, Radiohead, the Arctic Monkeys or the Strokes, sorry guys. No Blawan nor Pearson Sound. Shoutout to Sbtrkt, Danny Brown, Das Racist and everyone else who didn’t make it. This is totally subjective and I will totally change my mind next week. Tumblr isn’t letting me embed videos, I’ll try to work out how to make it work when I can.

1) James Blake - The Wilhelm Scream

Basically James Blake (real name James Blake Litherland) covering his dad, James Litherland.  Quite depressing. The actual Wilhelm scream is a television stock sound effect.

2) Adele - Someone Like You

One of the top 5 biggest selling singles of the year from the biggest selling album of the year. If I were cool I would have put Nicolas Jaar or Oneohtrix Point Never on the list instead.

3) Mosca - Bax

My DJ is live in the place. I wasn’t big into garage during its peak. But nice drums, unforgettable riff and lots of bass: dancefloor track of the year.

4) Gil Scott-Heron & Jamie xx - I’ll Take Care of U

Grandfather of hip-hop remixed by a member of one of the world’s best bands. Prefer this to Drake’s version (sorry, Billie). For someone who was beaten up by their boyfriend so badly they were hospitalised, made no real apology and continued to be a famous popstar, I would’ve expected Rihanna to have put a bit more pain into her vocals.

5) Darq E Freaker - Cherryade

Grime instrumental of the year from that brah who produced ‘Next Hype’.

6) Ifan Dafydd - No Good

This Welsh guy who used to live with James Blake and sounds just like him takes a really obvious sample and makes it even more mournful.

7) Prurient - A Meal Can Be Made

I doubt y’all will like this. A noise artist makes music that is actually enjoyable to listen to and melodic while retaining the toughness of his previous work. This year’s Sleigh Bells?

8) Rustie - Ultra Thizz

Ridiculous, undanceable bliss. I want this playing when I win the Nobel Prize for Connect Four.

9) Adele - Rolling in the Deep (Jamie xx shuffle)

Sexxy xx remixx. I like the original also.

10) M83 - Midnight City

An actual proper song! Epic electro pop that feels like a happy childhood. Pitchfork’s track of the year.

11) Joker - The Vision (instrumental)

Take an ounce of purple wow and add a pinch of wobble; Joker doing his thing.

12) Metronomy - The Look

Only Metronomy had this much swing in 2011. Only Metronomy would commission Blackout Crew for an official remix.

13) Lana del Rey - Video Games

I think this song is about Modern Warfare 3.

14) Julio Bashmore - Battle For Middle You

On the sole basis of the Lord of the Rings reference in the song title, I am going to claim that Bashmore is the Led Zeppelin of the 2010s. When did Bristol become the city of house music?

15) Azealia Banks - 212

For someone who lambasts Kanye West and his ilk for appropriating others’ work and adding little, it’s surprising I like this. I recently heard ‘Liquorice’ by Azealia, which is her vocalling ‘Pineapple Crush’, which was sort-of one of my tracks of last year. My favourite new rapper.

16) Toro y Moi - New Beat

Chillwave hero becomes less hypnagogic and more 70s soft rock, in a totally good way.

17) Ducktails - Killin’ the Vibe feat. Panda Bear

The chillest brahs from Real Estate and Animal Collective. Much more cohesive than Panda’s collabs with Zomby and Pantha du Prince.

18) Creep - Days feat. Romy xx (Deadboy remix)

Not sure whether I prefer the original or this UK funky remix that makes few changes.

19) Unknown Artist - Sicko Cell

Generally dance tracks about narcotics glorify them. Instead, Joy O takes a Ne-Yo sample to make them nightmarish. Too much.

20) Holy Other - Touch

An El-B vinyl died in 2003 and is now haunting my speakers.

21) Battles - Ice Cream feat. Matias Aguayo

I thought Battles would break up or turn terrible when Tyondai Braxton left. I was wrong.

22) Hudson Mohawke - Thunder Bay

No one ever made a track that sounded like this.

23) Instra:mental - Pyramid

Instra:mental dropped all pretentions of being drum & bass and made some straight-up Analord acid.

24) Burial - Street Halo

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

25) Zomby - Natalia’s Song

Pretty much a remix of the winner of the Russian X Factor.
